Energy Sprint with TREFOR Leads to Improved Flexibility in the Power Grid and New Collaborations Between SMEs
Challenge
The Danish electricity grid is facing increasing pressure due to greater electrification and the urgent green transition. With a growing number of electric vehicles, heat pumps, and other electrified solutions, it is crucial to make optimal use of the existing infrastructure.
The utility company TREFOR wanted insights into how to intelligently manage load levels in the power grid to extend its capacity and avoid costly expansions. The challenge was presented to seven small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in an innovation sprint organized by Digital Energy Hub.
Solution
Seven SMEs participated in the 16-week sprint, working intensively to develop solutions that enhance flexibility in the electricity grid. The sprint concluded with a presentation where the companies showcased their solutions to an expert panel composed of representatives from TREFOR, Syddansk Universitet, Energy Cluster Denmark, DigitalLead, and Center Denmark.
Several of the companies joined forces to develop joint solutions. For example, AI-nergy and LINC formed a partnership during the sprint, jointly developing an innovative solution that can be applied within TREFOR’s supply network.
Result
The sprint resulted in:
-
Concrete proposals for how TREFOR can optimize grid flexibility, including:
-
Use of AI for dynamic load management of transformer stations
-
Implementation of sensors and real-time data for improved monitoring and forecasting of capacity needs
-
Utilization of flexible consumption units such as heat pumps and electric vehicles for grid balancing
-
Visualization tools for operational staff to gain rapid insights and decision support
-
-
New collaborations between SMEs, paving the way for further solution development
-
Increased access to networks and funding opportunities for the participating companies
For TREFOR, the sprint offered a valuable opportunity to engage with multiple companies in a short time and gain new perspectives on a current challenge. It has created potential for future collaborations and innovation in the energy sector.
”Our main motivation was to engage in a structured interaction with TREFOR to better understand their needs. Additionally, we wanted to connect with other types of companies for potential collaboration. By participating, we’ve expanded our network and uncovered new, exciting paths to funding opportunities. It has definitely been an innovative experience.”
